How can I add a new food while logging my food diary?

Here’s how to add a new food product while logging your food diary.

Updated over a week ago

You can add foods in two ways:

  1. Add foods using the barcode functionality (with Artificial Intelligence)

    • Open the Nutrium app.

    • Select the meal you want to log into the food diary.

    • Tap the barcode icon to start searching.

    • Point the camera at the product’s barcode.

    • Select “Add food”.

    • Take a photo of the front of the food product.

    • Take a photo of the product’s nutrition facts label.

After uploading all the food details, Nutrium will analyze the collected information and then display the product’s name, brand, and barcode (these fields are editable).

Once you confirm the data, a new window will open showing the nutritional information. Here you'll have two versions, the simplified one, in which you can see calories, fats, carbohydrates and proteins. And the complete version, in which you will see all the data from the product’s nutrition facts label and can also add other information such as vitamins and minerals.

On the next page, you’ll have the option to add portions or serving sizes. This step is optional, and you can add more than one serving. After confirming, the food item will already be available in your Nutrium app database, ready to be added to your food diary.

2. Add foods manually

  • Open the Nutrium app.

  • Select the meal you want to log into the food diary.

  • Tap the “+” icon to add a new food.

  • Skip the food photo step.

  • Skip the nutrition facts photo step.

  • Add the food name and brand.

  • Add the nutritional information. There are 4 mandatory values you must fill in before continuing (calories, fats, carbohydrates, and proteins).

  • Enter the portion or serving size quantities, or skip this step.

  • Click confirm, and the food will now be available for you.

How do I fill in the nutritional information?

You can fill in the nutritional information in two different formats:

Per 100 g or 100 ml:

Indicating quantities per 100 g or 100 ml is more common in European countries.
There are two possible versions:

  • Simple version: only with the mandatory information. (If any of this information is missing, you won’t be able to continue.)

  • Complete version: with all the fields supported by Nutrium, including the mandatory ones.

Per serving:

Indicating quantities per serving or serving size is more common in markets like the U.S., Brazil, and South America.
There are two possible versions:

  • Simple version: only with the required information. (If any of this information is missing, you won’t be able to continue.)

  • Complete version: with all the fields supported by Nutrium, including the required ones.

Regardless of the market, when adding a food, the per 100 g / 100 ml option is selected by default. If you prefer to add the food per serving, simply tap the button on the top right of the screen.

How can I record portions/serving sizes?

After filling in the nutritional analysis information, you can add different serving sizes.

A predefined list of measures (e.g., spoon, bottle, or cup) is available, and you can add several different ones. When adding a household measure, you must indicate the quantity it corresponds to.

If a household measure has already been recognized before, it will be added automatically.

Is the food I created visible to everyone?

As soon as you create a new food, it becomes immediately visible to you. At the end of the day, the system performs an automatic validation, assigning a score (from 0 to 10) based on the accuracy of the information.

If the food scores 7 or higher, it becomes available to the entire Nutrium community and will be identified in the list with a ✅ symbol (meaning it’s validated by Nutrium). This score is not visible.

On your side, whenever you log your food diary, you’ll have access to the food you created. Your professional will only see that food if they use it in the food diary record.

Can I edit or remove a food I added?

No, foods cannot be edited or removed. If you need to modify or delete a food, you should contact Nutrium support via support@nutrium.com.
